Statement
My paintings are rooted in everyday life and urban landscape. They are hybrid spaces, evoking both tile external world of the street and an intimate sense of lived experience within the body. Combining direct observation, memory and improvisation, the paintings are not literal narratives, but speak through physicality. They are not about fixed identities, but about relationships, about the mingling of private and public space that occurs on the street, and within ourselves.
I am working for the sense that everything is solid and rooted, yet open and breathing. Im after an economy of means, in which everything is necessary and nothing is extra, but also a layered density. Shapes group together and lock in, setting up a decisive spatial structure, which then shifts, or switches during the process of looking. My paintings are about sculpting out and articulating the disjunctive spaces between and around us. For me painting resonates with a sense of place, body language, and human interaction, charged with psychological and social implications.
